PSA test and aneros

there is a recent thread about prostate cancer and prostate massage. i think it is a good one to pay attention to.

i want to report a related issue. i recently had a PSA test. it went up from 1.9 to 3.6 in a couple of years. that's a big jump and according to my age my uro recommended a biopsy (of the prostate).

i didn't exactly want to go there. luckily my regular doc said that the PSA can be sensitive to pelvic floor physical therapy i was having (basically massage of the pelvic floor muscles to relieve chronic pain there) and also to prostate massage.

the half-life of the PSA (prostate specific antigen) is 2-3 days. so, i figured i should lay off of the physical therapy and prostate stimulation for about a week.

after the week's rest, my PSA went down to 2.7 which is only a smidgen over "normal" for my age.

anybody else had elevated PSA on account of the aneros?

It is quite normal to observe an elevated PSA with ANY kind of prostate activity whether that's prostate massage or even ejaculation! Last year I had an ultrasound performed on my prostate (the doctor used a condom around it....yet another reason I dislike condoms, lol). Afterwards I was given a prescription slip to have a PSA done. The prescription was stamped with a warning advising that I wait 48-72 hours after a sonogram, DRE, or ejaculation before having blood drawn.

I'm pretty sure that an Aneros session would fall into the same category. Ongoing bouts of prostatitis can also effect one's PSA (if you're having a flare-up your numbers will be higher).

When I have a urologist appointment scheduled, I normally lay off my Aneros activities for a week prior.

Hi Darwin,

Exactly, after any type of prostate stimulation, including a digital rectal exam, PSAs levels become artificially inflated. This includes using the Aneros as well. After a few days the level will go down to your "normal" level. Therefore we recommend that you don't take a PSA test immediately after a session with your Aneros.
