You thoroughly enjoy being outside a lounging about on your lawn chairs or other pieces of Rattan Corner Sofa in your patio or yard in the spring, summer and even in the fall. However, in the winter with the snow, freezing rain and cold, your outdoor patio furniture might not hold up too well. That’s why it’s important to take the correct steps to protect your patio furniture. How do you protect this type of furniture? Let’s look at the various measures to take during the winter to prolong the life of your chairs, tables and other pieces.

aluminum furniture

Aluminum is nearly rustproof, so rain itself won’t cause too many issues. However, most aluminum patio furniture frames including holes to help drain water, but these also let water in. As winter temperatures fluctuate above and below freezing, the water will freeze and melt, potentially weakening the frames. Be sure your aluminum furniture is completely dry before storage to avoid this.

Scrub your furniture with a few drops of a mild laundry detergent and warm water. After drying, look for any scratches and touch them up with paint as needed. You can also apply a coat of car wax for extra protection.

Wood Furniture

All outdoor furniture made from wood should have a protective sealant applied to it to protect it from any moisture. During the winter, moisture can freeze inside the wood and cause it to crack. Simply putting a cover over it will not work because wood can absorb moisture from the air. It’s best to both seal and cover. If the wood is painted, restore it with a fresh coat of paint. Give it a good wash with a water-detergent-bleach solution and a mildly abrasive sponge. Rinse and let it completely dry before storing.

Plastic Furniture

Plastic outdoor furniture does not absorb moisture like wood does but frigid winter temperatures tend to make plastic brittle enough that it will crack. It’s best to store plastic furniture indoors or in an area where it won’t drop below freezing. Before storing it away, wash thoroughly with a detergent solution and rinse.

Metal Furniture

Metal furniture easily rusts with snow and freezing rain. When rust forms, it weakens the metal and causes it to start breaking down. Before storing it, look for any rust spots and treat it with a rust-neutralizing primer. Smooth the area and then apply a spray paint that matches the original surface. For extra protection, add a coat of automotive wax. It’s best to bring this type of patio furniture indoors, not only for the winter but when it rains as well.

Wicker Furniture

Perhaps one of the most beautiful outdoor furniture materials is wood. A natural element that can favor many styles makes it a popular choice for homeowners and businesses. Unfortunately wood patio furniture requires more care to keep it beautiful. Before you store your wood furniture for the winter, wash it with an oil soap made for wood and let it dry completely. Remove any clear fabric cushions as well. Your wood furniture is very susceptible to moisture and is best stored indoors, in a garage, shed or storage facility.
