Shea butter of choice?

It seems many people use Shea butter as the lube of choice. I was wondering what brand you use and where you buy it.

I also read that there are basically 3 types: raw, unrefined and refined, and that unrefined is the preferred choice.

Additionally one brand I have read about on these forums is Now Foods. I found these 2 from that brand, however it does not say if either are raw, unrefined or refined. Thoughts?

@BobaFett, there was a comment it was odorless and white and said it has therefore been refined.
In Australia we have a good source. Not sure in what country you are located.

You definitely want unrefined. Look for a shop in your area that sells soap making supplies. Unrefined is yellow in colour and has a nutty odour.

I've purchased the "Virgin" Shea Butter from here, but they only ship within Canada:

Definitely unrefined here. I bought and used 'AAA' Shea Butter for several years. It's a recognized packaged brand albeit a bit high in price.

This year I've twice bought an unbranded butter loosely packed in plastic bags. It was sold through Amazon and the shipper was Dade Pharma. Both shipments were a Yellow-Ivory color and following pasteurization the molded lube sticks (suppositories) had the 'streaking' typical of other unrefined butters.

I recommend that, regardless of branding or packaging, pasteurize it by holding it at 185-190 deg. F. for five to ten minutes. Using a double boiler and the procedures for @Rumel 's 'Natural Jelly will do the job.

Enjoy!

Rook, thanks for the pasteurization tip! In the past I've made the natural jelly with success. For the butter, are the measurements the same? 2 tablespoons to 1 cup of water?

Here's @Xochipilli 's processing technique (scroll to the top of the thread):

Xochi also includes links to prior Forum discussions about Shea Butter, Coconut Oil and other vegetable, seed and nut oils. I prefer a mixture that's solid at room temperature and that melts quickly at body temperature.

A caution: I bought my first Shea butter from a nearby Candle, Cosmetic and Health Food store. This proved to be a big mistake. The perfume in the product proved irritating. Avoid anything that makes mention of 'softer skin' or that, 'cures wrinkles.'

Those ice cube trays look like the perfect size. I might have to get them for use with the coconut oil I have been using.

Sill looking for a good source for unrefined shea butter. A search on Amazon and the greater internet brings up many choices but I was hoping to hear from forum members specific brands people were using. I'm in the US if that helps determine where I can buy it.

The now brand was perfect. Mix with coconut oil and blend together and refrigerate or freeze and it works longer and well. Prelube yourself with 3-5 ml of coco/Shea and light coat on your helix. Slippery stuff Wil work just fine after that. I've also been tempted to try the sessions lube, something wi th a more natural formula like agar
