Safety of Prostate Massage in Older Age

Hi, I recently purchased a Helix and have been viewing the guidance etc on this site. I see from WiKi that there are potentially health issues in prostate massage particularly in older age (I’m in my early sixties).
Wiki states that prostate massage is not recommended for men with acute bacterial prostatitis, prostate cancer or related diseases of the prostate as there is a chance such massage can inflame or spread the disease to other parts of the body. My concern is that it is not uncommon to unknowingly have prostate cancer i.e not have any symptoms and using the helix in this situation could be very detrimental. Screening for prostate cancer is also not 100% accurate. I appreciate nothing is without risk but I was wondering what other people’s thoughts were in this area.

John - I've seen the same warnings. I think it's important to honestly determine why you are pursuing prostate massage. If for pleasure, that's one thing, but if to relieve a condition such as getting up to urinate several times at night, that's something else. If the former, fine. If the latter, be aware that relief of that situation through prostate massage is not medically indicated. Yes, I know that this amounts to a homeopathic remedy and doctors in general are opposed to it, but I asked a few urologists and physicians aides about it and none would recommend it. None said it was harmful, but none thought it showed promise. One pointed me to a study that was done that showed results, but then called out the numerous issues with how the study was conducted - ambiguous patient categorization, lack of a control group, etc.

Well guys at the age of 69 and as someone who only used aneros for pleasure - then diagnosed with prostate cancer - then had the prostate removed and still today uses the aneros for pleasure the key to my successful nerve sparing removal that has not required any chemo or radiation followup was EARLY DETECTION. I lost my father many years ago but as soon as my little brother was diagnosed and had his prostate remove, I began following my PSA numbers every 6 months. As soon as they started to go up - I went for a biopsy and from there to the removal and all cancer was totally enclosed in the gland. This cancer is only a hidden killer if you don't get your self checked on a regular basis and it is extra important if it runs in the family.

Go do a blood test tomorrow and then monitor that number when you get to your 60's guys. I do admit that every male may not agree with me but just do not ignore the testing that is available today and hope that the future will allow us the ability to follow DNA analysis as a cancer screening tool.

IT.

See a urologist, oldjohn, and let them give you a good male check up including a digital rectal exam and PSA measurement and maintain regular follow-up with them. Prostate massage was done by urologists in years past to help with non-bacterial prostatitis symptoms and as gentle as the Aneros massagers are on your prostate gland when used as directed, they can safely accomplish the same thing. And as you'll read in many posts here, they are quite effective in reducing urinary urgency and frequency, and if you learn how to have prostate orgasms with them, they really help your sexual function.

Short answer: This is a highly individual matter since we all age differently and one 70 y.o. body will be more vulnerable than another. Likewise our prostates are all different, having been exposed to lifelong differences in body chemistry and pathogens.

My prostate has been active for sex for over 69 years. I do have BPH. When I started using medications for BPH (age 66) it was estimated to be about 45-50 grams. During the next 5 years it grew another 5-10 grams and I started combining massage with taking a pill. Over the next 5 years, the growth ceased and I've become stable with a 'healthy prostate' that would weigh in at about 50 grams. My Uro used to say he'd do some surgery 'some day.' Now he feels that, baring PCa I'll escape his table. 🙂

I do annually track my blood chemistry to see what the effects have been from the personal lubricants I use. I'm an oil-based lube guy who (save for rare occasions during travel) sticks with Vaseline, Coconut Oil and Shea Butter. My occasional water based lube is Slippery Stuff (gel) which has no Glycerin but does contain some Parabens.

This year my serum Total-Cholesterol, non-HDL Cholesterol, VLDL, LDL and Triglycerides are all at less than 50% of the maximums in those categories. My HDL is 77.

I am a moderate meat-eater, consume large amounts of fiber, use an occasional for a colon cleanse and exercise, "moderately." My body mass index averages 22.5. I swallow 1/2 a tab of Doxazosin about an hour before my 'twice a week Prostate massage, using Vice or Maximus.

C 'ya on the far side guys. 🙂

Within a year of having started my Aneros use I was diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer, so I was unknowingly using the Aneros prior to this knowledge. I curtailed my use of Aneros until after having radiation treatment and subsequently returned to Aneros use following treatment, that was 9 years ago. As far as I know I am cancer free and my Aneros use prior to my treatment did not spread the cancer to other parts of my body. You are right to have concerns and this should provide impetus to have regular prostate checkups and maintain good health practices as @IT_Kan, @slimjm & @rook above have recommended. By taking those precautions you should be able to enjoy your Aneros use without undo fear of spreading infections to other parts of your body.

rumel, when you had your radiation treatment, was it strictly external, or did they also use the radioactive seeds implanted into the prostate? I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 12 years ago and recieved both 6 weeks of external radiation treatment and implanted seeds, which I still have. My PSA has been undetectable ever since. In fact, I just had it checked last month. I have a question for the guys here, would the Aneros be safe to use on a man with the seeds still implanted?

I only had the exterior radiation treatment. I opted for that procedure because it was the least invasive and statistically about as effective as the seeding procedure. I am happy to hear you remain cancer free to date as do I.

In regard to the safety of Aneros use with a seeded prostate, I don't know and I haven't seen any studies which even remotely address that issue. This is something you should discuss with your doctor.
Good Vibes to You !
