You came to the right place! I'm 64 and have BPH, and had an attack of acute urinary retention caused by an infection last christmas day that required the insertion of a Foley catheter.
I NEVER, repeat, NEVER want to have acute urinary retention EVER AGAIN!! It's very painful when your bladder fills up and is about to explode, because your prostate closes off the urethra completely! I had three Foleys in two weeks. 1100ccs urine retained the first time, 650 the second time, and 850 the third time. I travel with intermittent catheters and lube all the time now.
Since I was biopsied three times without signs of cancer, the uro wouldn't consider surgery, and after reading how important the prostate is and how important the nerve plexus around it is, I never want to have prostate surgery unless my life is at risk from cancer, which, eventually, all men get if they live long enough!
