it is really quite something that this online community has been going for almost ten years yet, since it exists almost solely in text, there isn't necessarily a consensus on how the word aneros, the centerpiece of all discussion, is even pronounced!

we can have a poll on this, but first i want to get right the possibilities:

1) AN-er-os
2) an-AIR-os
3) an-ER-os

are those clear? are there any others?

there are at least two voice recordings i have heard that use the word, and they differ on pronunciation.

- the HypnAerosession i think uses pronunciation (2) above.

- the unofficial instructional video YouPorn - Porn uses (1) above.

just to get the discussion going, i have always used (1) above.

Hi Darwin, 🙂

I've always used the number one definition you listed. And it never occurred to me that there was another way to pronounce it. I'm sure the owners of the Aneros company likely know how it was intended to be pronounced. Send them a note and find out?

A-NE-ROS

But really IMO it's a combination of the greek Aner-man and Eros-god of love

I use pronunciation 3.

To me the root word is EROS which means sensual/sexual love and it involves the anus, hence the root AN.

So AN-E-ROS for me with a short vowel sound on the A and the E and a long vowel sound on the O. The accent for me falls on the E syllable of this three syllable word. Seems easier to say for me.

ok, without benefit of official phonetics symbols, how's this:

(1) AN-eh-ros
(2) an-AIR-ros (i included the R in the middle syllable only to make clear how the A sounds)
(3) an-EH-ros

how's that?

i do agree with the etymology your propose (anal + eros), which is what i always assumed. but i still pronounce it like (1)

I've always said "a-nair-ous" when speaking. But then again... that's been twice now.

Guys,

Naturally one may choose to pronounce the word any way that you want. However the correct pronunciation (and the one that I have confirmed and reconfirmed many times over the years with the owner) is closest to number 2 : an-AIR-os

When we were in production with the HypnAerosession CD one of the things that I was involved with was working with Alana to get the pronunciation of the product correct. As I recollect my phonetic spelling of the word was as follows:

a-NAIR-os where the a is pronounced like the "a" in the word america

and the -os is a similar sound to the "oss" in the word gross

I also sent her a recording of my own voice pronouncing the word as well, so that there would be no confusion.

There you have it !

It sounds strange to my English ears when I hear it pronounced an-AIR-roes (sharp S at the end). That pronunciation seems to reflect an American trend in pronouncing foreign words ending in -os as "oes" (as in 'toast' without the t's). It's quite ugly sounding to me. The pronunciation that made my toes curl was when an American friend of mine pronounced "risotto" as ree-ZOE-toe. There o's are always short in Italian and it just made it sound affected.

Still, language evolves and changes according to geography, so no doubt an American hearing me say Aneros will think it sounds dumb and affected too! The real pronunciation of this device should be "Ahhhhhhhh"!

Several years ago I did a Playboy After Dark radio interview with one of the owners of the company. Despite the fact that I spelled it phonetically for the hosts (prior to the show) and pronounced it for them during the show, they continually referred to it as:

AN-URR-ROES

It was pretty amusing to me at the time. It's almost like a rohrschach test, people will make of it as they will. So it goes! I'm sure that Rorymuscle will have his own take on this, but the last time I did Erotica UK I heard several pronunciations there, these two were the most common:

AN-NARE-US

AN-NAIR-ROES

When a true "S" (ESS) was used at the end of the word the "O" morphed into more of a -US or -OUS sound. When there was a long O sound used the "S" took on more of a "Z" sound.

For me, I have a freind who pronounces it ANNA ROSS.

This gives me the willies as I think the root word is EROS, which is sexual love.

I have pronounced like choice 2. It seems to make sense to me that the choice should be #2. 🙂
