I think they look sexy and comfortable, after doing a google image search on em. I think that they're seen as gay because they're often worn by strippers at male strip clubs. I'd feel a bit hesitant to wear them, but only because so many people are homophobic and the underwear itself is somewhat revealing. However i can see them being accepted as beach/swim wear by the general populace.

Guys, I come to this thread as a baby boomer in his 60's as regards "men's things". Until the late 1960's or 70's and beyond, jockstraps were de rigeur among men and boys playing sports, swimming, and even for leisure wear. I can thank my late dad and my seventh grade gym coach for pointing me in the right direction in wearing a jock for support and protection. I remember seeing racks of these items for sale in clothing stores and sporting good stores in my youth.

My dad when I was young was a Little League umpire who officiated baseball games in my hometown in Connecticut. When I was eleven years old I used to see his supporter drying above our bathtub after laundering at home. That made a big impression on me. A little later I discovered athletic cups, and my jock/cup fetish was born.

However, I think g strings and thongs were far in the future after I went off to college in 1968.

Newguy8, I would reccomend doing your own laundry and then you don't have to worry about it. I guess I have just come to the conclusion I don't really care what others think, I now wear thongs, jocks and all types of sexy briefs all the time! Try it, you might like it!
