Being able to focus on the sensations, and also being able to maintain focus during a session for as long as necessary is not always easy. On the other hand, it's surprisingly easy to lose focus and let a Super-O slip away... It also appears that modern multi-media could have negative effects on our ability to concentrate and focus, and scientists are starting to believe that it could even trigger ADHD in adults.
This is a good presentation with links between focus, ADHD or ADHD-like manifestations, dopamine levels (important for Super-Os !), hyperfocus (good for S-Os) and several other topics. ADHD & How Anyone Can Improve Their Focus | Huberman Lab Podcast #37
The video is over two hours long, so it would be interesting to discuss specific parts and how they can relate to the Aneros journey.
Edit : It seems to me that there are mainly 2 schools of thought about what happens in the Super-O states. One leans more towards spirituality, energy, and similar ideas, and the other is more about the science of things. At this point in time I'm happily mixing both and it seems to be fine. I think that for some people, understanding why things work in concrete terms will help them towards improving their sessions in ways we do not often think about. The feedback loop between dopamine and focus could explain in some way the self-feeding mechanism of Super-Os, in which a S-O leads to another and they all feel better and better even as stimulation goes down.
A busy mind, mind noise, not being able to turn off my thoughts: I know that that's been part of my problem. I don't necessarily think I have ADHD but I'm sure that getting focus will help me a lot, so thanks for this link. I've got some listening to do...
There are some very interesting insights about how focus works in the first place. The part at 1:17 about a potential permanent increase in focus from a simple exercise is very thought-provoking. I tried it yesterday, thinking, hey this will be easy and watch me do it every day and (maybe) stack the benefits. Well I could hardly last 30 seconds. I have some serious work to do...
I have mild adhd. I came up with a way to keep me focussed on task, very important cause I have a very dangerous job. Very simple , when I start to drift I say"pay attention" aloud or in my mind. Almost like a safe word. You can write it on a peice of paper or arm and look at it as often as you need to. Till you get used to saying it, it will in ashort itme snap you into focus. I have been doing this for 48 years and have told others about it, and it has worked for most of them. Simple and easy. You can use any word or words you like. My current word is oowbegoo, don't ask. Works though.
