Quick question folks. Found this on the shelf @ Target today.

Astroglide | Astroglide Natural

From what I can see on the ingredients list, everything appears to be all natural and safe. Anything I should be concerned with? Or anyone have any further insight with the product they would like to share?

Love the Flax seed lube a BUNCH, but would like to have a 'natural' store bought brand handy too.

Az.

Natural? Yea, if you consider petrochemical derivates as part of nature =)

Astroglide contains Purified water, glycerin, propylene glycol, polyquaternium 32, methylparaben, propyl paraben

The two parabens and the glycol are petrochemical derivates.

Wrong Astroglide Cyrez.
A full listing of the ingredients:

Purified Water, Xylitol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Potassium Ascorbyl Tocopheryl phosphate, Pectin, Chamomilla Recutita (Martricaria) Flower Extract, Hydroxyethlcelluose, Methylparaben.

The only ingredients I question are: Hydroxyethlcellulose and Potassium Ascorbyl Tocopheryl phosphate

Methylparaben is produced naturally and found in several fruits, primarily blueberries, along with other parabens. There is no evidence that methylparaben or propylparabens are harmful at concentrations typically used in body care or cosmetics.[1] Methyl and propylparabens are considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe) for food and cosmetic antibacterial preservation.[2] Methylparaben is readily metabolized by common soil bacteria, making it completely biodegradable.

Aztec,

From what I'm seeing here I'm assuming that this is a liquid and not a gel? Interesting the use of xylitol, this is a sweetener commonly found in certain kinds of chewing gum. It's actually inhibitory to certain bacteria as well (has even been found helpful in rebuilding enamel in teeth!). I'm interested to find out if this will have the purgative effect commonly associated with the use of glycerin (another sugar alcohol) preparations. The ingredients here are indeed naturally derived. The question is it effective and does it dry out easily?

Give it a shot and be sure to keep us updated!

Cumming from the 'super sensitive to glycerin' gang, I'm aboard on the trial.

However, this outfit is a neighbor and I'd luv to keep the bucks in my own part of the state.

Late edit: On order !
- However, made from corn cobs?

My first impression!
GREAT!

My second impression is that it does dry out quickly on the outer fringe. Internally it was fine for me, with no 'need to purge', or excessive drying out. In fact when I removed the Helix, I actually leaked a little. This was after a 2 hour session.

The consistency is jelly like, however it is thinner than you would expect. The key for me was to keep the outer fringe from drying out. Shea butter did the job just fine.

Let me know your thoughts after you use it Rook.

Hello Aztec and ssw1, 🙂

As a user of unrefined 100% shea butter for anal lube almost exclusively for a few years now, I actually don't recommend the Alaffia brand. I suspect it's quality is shoddy as it caused me a very significant burning sensation in my anus and rectum which implies they use chemical extraction methods. In addition it's lubricating properties were not that great, far too thin and runny. (You can read about my experiences with Alaffia on page 2, post #89 of the link below) Ideally what you are looking for is a shea butter that is pale yellow to white in color. The brand that has worked best for me is "Now Solutions" (Used to be Now Foods) which sits in the pale yellow category.

Unrefined 100% shea butter is far far better than the standard Astroglide which was my first anal lube. Besides the fact that regular Astroglide has glycerin in it which caused "urge to purge" and inner anal sphincter burning issues for me, as it does for a lot of men. Because shea butter is an oil, it does not dry out, so re-application is not necessary. And yes you can put it in your rectum. It is a natural tree nut based oil. So I feel this is a safer product to use in the rectum than synthetically produced lubes, as the rectum absorbs whatever is put in it.

On that note, here is the main shea butter thread where you can get even more information from myself and other users:

Hello ssw1, 🙂

Not likely. Try your local health food store or co-op. You'll find shea butter in general, in the cosmetics section under the hand/body lotion sub-section. Take a look and try the tester units to get an idea of what different brands are like if they don't stock the Now Solutions brand. If you can't find an appropriate type locally, then there are plenty of places to buy it over the Internet. Using your preferred search engine, search for the term "now solutions shea butter" (without the quotes), and you will get a number of relevant results.

Now Foods will not be found at Walgreens or Rite-aid. This is a higher quality product, that can most likely be found at a local whole foods market. I'm not only referring to the grocery chain, Whole Foods, but also your local organic shop.

To make it even easier for you to find a store near you, Now Foods has a Store Finder. Hope this helps.

I use it. I like it. Very convenient. No purgative for me. Long lasting.

With the new addition of the Vice... will shea butter (the oil) attack the silicon and start to break it down over time? I only started to wonder about this because I was doing some research on coconut oil and found that it (the coconut oil) can break down condoms. I know condoms are generally latex.. but is there any correlation or concern about using shea butter with the vice?

Aztec,
Please accept my apologies for hijacking your thread...

Yakapelli,

Kudos to you on the research. I never would have guessed that coconut oil or any other non-petroleum based oil derivative like Shea Butter would have an emulsifying effect on latex condoms or silicon based products.

Thanks to an enthusiastic endorsement by Love_is, I now enjoy the superior lubrication properties of Shea Butter. IMHO it's far greater, in both longevity and mobility, than its water based counterparts. My only concern, not only for me but also my Shea Butter using friends on this forum, is the potential deleterious effects. I realize that data representing the long term effects of inserting lubrication in the rectum for Aneros and other anal sex practices is limited. Nonetheless, I would be interested to know if anyone has information concerning the use of, so called, natural lubricants.

Safe and healthy practices to all,
Neubie

For Yakapelli, neubie, and anyone else with questions or concerns about shea butter that is not related to Aztec's questions in his first post...

Please post them in the main shea butter thread, and myself or other users will be happy to answer them, rather than hijacking this one. Thank you.

No worries at all. Carry on folks. We are all after the same safe practices for our Aneros use. I am a very organic person by nature and very active and fit. My goal for starting this thread was to find a natural product that was safe and that you could purchase on a shelf or via the net. I was just excited to find a natural water based product. Hijack away if we all learn something from this. I'm pretty easy going.

Az.

thanks aztec for finding this lube !

Had a sudden trip out of the country last month and packed quickly, tossing in a new bottle of Astroglide Natural. (My usual travel lube is SS-gel.)

Nice lube! About mid-way in consistency between Slippery Stuff Gel and Slippery Stuff Liquid. With the cap removed the opening on the 4oz bottle is large enough to accept any lube shooter I've seen and the bottle cap didn't ooze lube on the flight back home.

Two ml. injected and about 1/2 ml smeared on the Helix was just right. (same as I use with SS-gel) Feel, slip and tool agility is equal or slightly better than SS-gel.

Missing was a chemical 'smell' I sense about 45 minutes into a Slippery Stuff session as the lube gets into my bloodstream. AFAIC that's a real plus. No tendency to purge and no anal or bowel irritation. Lube was good out to 2+10 and like Slippery Stuff it needed help at the 2+20 point. On long split sessions (2 hours, a break, then 2 more hours) there was no 'crustiness' that I get with most water based lubes. Liked it so much I didn't use SS gel but just once on the month-long trip.

The price was nearly twice what I've paid for Slippery Stuff but I'll favor switching when I use up the pint or so of SS I've got on the shelf.

Travel tip that maybe other guys are on to: Unsure of the tap water, I opted to fill my bulb syringe with warmed bottled drinking water. It occurred to me that it would be easy to carry a Higginson and just stick it's tube into the drinking water bottle rather than fool with the bulb syringe. Also more compact in the shaving kit!

Enjoy.... rook

P.S. Did a Vice session with Astroglide Natural this weekend. No evidence of any damage to that velvety, sensuous surface !

I use Vaseline covered with Astroglide liquid. So far the best. Lasts for hours.
Try it and judge it.

I still find unrefined shea butter to be way out in front, especially when combined with a pre-lube of 3ml KY gel injected using a syringe.

For travelling, I take a small container of Vaseline, used in conjunction with a small jar of KY gel. This works well for occasional use.
