Congratulations! You've stumbled onto the most popular Aneros aftermarket modification. Lotsa guys eliminate the curly handle because that allows the Aneros to move more freely (better stimulation) and it's easier to "wear" it with out the curly handle.

Get a pair of heavy nippers like what electricians use to cut wire (they're called diagonal cutters or "dikes") and trim it off so there's no hook on the end to poke you, and just sand the stub smooth. You're in business!
