I just started using a Helix Syn. I've only used it about 5 times, but already it is holding an odor. I've washed it with soap and hot water and wiped it down with rubbing alcohol, but that doesn't seem to work. Is it safe to boil, or will that damage the silicone or the adhesive holding the silicone to the plastic?
@Gephrey - I also noticed my Helix-Syn holding an odour, after just the first use. What I also noticed is that it went away after a few uses (I've used mine seven times so far). Maybe there's a film of some sort on the outside of the device as a result of the manufacturing process that might contribute to this, and with use it eventually goes away taking the odour with it, but that's just a theory.
I can't answer your question about the safety of boiling the device, but I have seen forum member @rook mention that his toys go through a dishwasher cleaning from time to time. I know he owns a Helix-Syn, and can only assume that it too receives such attention.
I use dettol antiseptic in hot water with soap every now and then to disinfect the device this helps with removing any odour. You need to give it a good rub too sometimes. I then rinse it in hot water again to remove any residue from soap or disinfectant. I dont have a silicone aneros but the plastic ones suffer the same thing some times.
I wouldn't worry too much about the smell of it. It's a solo toy and it's just going to go back up your butt anyways. But if it really bothers you, make sure you are washing it under hot water, and if that doesn't take care of it, you can put it in a 10% bleach solution for 20 minutes. Then wash it off again afterwards.
Rub all over with baby wipes, then squirt some anti-bacterial hand soap onto an old (soft) toothbrush and scrub it all over. Rinse in hot water.
When Vice was new I asked Brian Mayfield whether the manufacturer considered it dish-washer safe. He related that it was OK in the upper rack. I take pull the Aneros toys out of the dishwasher after the first wash (has a limit of 160 deg. F.) and rinse them in hot water to get rid of the detergent.
Recently I took my "cleaned" -syn in hand and started rubbing it with my thumb. That action 'stripped' a soft of greasy film from the silicone. The residue sort of rolled off like eraser crumbs from a slick surface.
I don't know if the "greasy film" was an accumulation or something from manufacturing. I'm now following twll's routine with the baby wipe then use a mild dish detergent and a washcloth followed by a rinse.
I have tried dipping Helix Syn in 10 % bleach solution. 90% smell is gone. Maybe I need to dip it a couple of times more to remove the smell totally.
I coated mine in tea tree antiseptic cream for a day. Solved the smell problem. Currently washing with soap and water.
Now that I've been able to get rid of the smell, what should I do with it? Oh Yeah, ........ I remember, stick it up my butt! :))
I use an antibacterial hand wash and hot water. This solves the problem for me.
