Hi , can water based lubes be harmful, i had a session with my progasm yesterday which was great, like today sometimes i feel as if i have a bit of an upset stomache and a bit lurthargic can the lube get anywhere it should not from your anus ?
Glycerin is a substance with low toxicity that is commonly found in foods, beverages and pharmaceutical products. The body actually generates glycerin when fat is metabolized. That said, many people have a sensitivity to glycerin when used as a personal lubricant. When used anally it has been known to produce a purgative effect in some individuals. I'm not familiar with upset stomach or lethargy being linked to it however. The easiest way to determine if the lube is the culprit is to try a glycerin-free product and see how you fare. There are many glycerin-free alternatives on the market these days, available in water, oil and silicone based formulations.

The forum seems to 'relive' this topic every six months. Odds are you can chalk off your digestive upset and lethargic feelings to a common virus.
However, some study of anal lubes at Johns Hopkins was discussed in this thread -- http://www.aneros.com/forum/f5/lubrication-dangers-update-13551/index3.html -- . (scroll down to post #1 for the link to the Johns Hopkins study.)
Colonoscopies of those gents indicated that anal lube did migrate well up into the colon. OTOH, we don't know how thoroughly those subjects were cleaned out when they were lubed.
There's been anecdotal discussion of glycerin-water based lubes in this forum -- http://www.aneros.com/forum/f5/lube-worries-14678/ --
As a result we have a 'gang of renegades' who endorse vegetable based (nut and seed oil) lubes in preference to either water based or petroleum based lubes.
In our game, we regularly explore a part of the body that's evolved to be very absorptive. Although there are some anatomical differences between individuals -- Hepatic portal vein - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -- , some of us have a very short path from the blood circulation in the lower GI tract to the liver.

Oops,
Yes indeed there are several very good natural homemade alternatives as well. Unrefined Shea butter that Rook mentioned, a Natural Jelly recipe (3 vitamin E capsules, 1 tsp. beeswax, 3 tblsp. almond oil) that has been very popular in the forum as well and lastly a water based lube made from Flax seeds see here
Astroglide also produces their own naturally derived product, it was recently reviewed in the forum, check it out here

i am one of the advocates of avoiding water based lubes. i am not a doctor nor an expert in this area. the concern i have is that the rectum and lower colon are designed to absorb water so water based lubes will be taken up. since the lubes have ingredients that are not necessarily understood in the context of absorption into the blood stream, i prefer to avoid that. i just don't like the idea of that stuff possibly gathering someplace in my body.
i have been out of commission for a little while owing to a prostatitis flare up, so i only have very preliminary results to report, but, my current interest in lube is CRISCO. i hope to give a full report after i have had more experimentation. but so far, this is what i like about it:
