What I mean when I use the term is a contraction of the external anal sphincter muscle that is sustained over time. As you continue to use the aneros your ability the sustain a contraction of this muscle will improve. This muscle along with your PC muscle of your pelvic floor are the muscles you have voluntary control over and can develop.

The idea of a base or basal contraction that I had in mind in most of my writings involves the above definition and something more as well.

A basal contraction forms a starting point as a measure of intensity, a foundation from which all other contractions begin and end. Generally it will be of a level that is just above that of relaxation. Stronger contractions will begin from this place and return to it.
