So far, I've been using a squirt bottle to flush out the rectum prior to my aneros session. This worked well, except that it is kind bulky/awkward to hold.
Are there any drawbacks I should know about?
If so, what would be good product for me to purchase at the local drugstore?
As far as 'best" is concerned, it's up to you and how your toilet facilities are arranged. Inexpensive and simple --> buy a two-pack of Fleet Enemas (not the oil ones), discard the fluid and fill them with tap water. That gives you two quick shots which is all you'll usually need. This is a good way to avoid injecting too much fluid. The Higginson works well for many guys -- count the squeezes -- you'll need a large cup or jar for the water. The fountain syringe choice is easy to maneuver but you'll need a measuring cup to avoid 'overdosing.'
I call this a "rectal douche" to distinguish it from something larger or more complex. Some of us prefer to do this standing up over the toilet or bidet to avoid getting water further up, into the colon.
Late edit: However, lying down might be less uncomfortable the first few times one does this.
Here's the quote from the Wiki:
"...
Here are a few different devices you can use, all available at a drugstore:
-- a bulb type or Higginson rectal syringe.
-- a Fleet™ enema bottle. But... don't use the enema solution. Refill with tap water.
-- fountain type enema. This is really just a hot water bottle that has been cut open at one end."

This is probably the best. The other ones start making thinking I'm in chemistry class or something.
I know the wiki says to discard the fluid as well. Why?

"Chemistry" is the reason. Most of these are designed to trigger a fast bowel movement using laxative chemicals. The "end" result is irritation and bowel/rectal stress that's a real arousal and session killer.
All you want to do is just rinse out residue & small particles so that your lube will work better.
Note the change to my prior post regarding body position for your first few times with this. Sorry, wasn't considering someone new to a qjuick cleanse.
Similarly, is it a good idea to refrain from fiber-rich foods before an aneros session so that you don't have a bowel movement during the middle of the session?

I think, the other way around.
A consistent daily fiber load establishes a schedule which you can tailor to your daily work, travel, recreational and Aneros schedule. Once you find your "transit time" you can juggle your eating sked to make you GTG with just a simple rinse. ...enjoy
Slimjim probably knows more accurately but I think most guys probably have a transit time of 24-30 hours without much fiber and more like 20-24 hours with plenty of fiber.
However, I once bunked with a guy who only 'went' every 3 or 4 days. So all bets were off on his transit time.

hahhaha "transit time" -I like that. My transit time is super quick. Sometimes I can go up to 5 times in the same day, which is why I ask about how to slow things down.
When I was younger I had times when I could go for four days without a transit. One time our school sent us kids out in the wilderness for a week, and no one wanted to do their duty out in the bush, so we all tried holding it for the longest time. Well, I only had to go once during that week.
Insipidtoast,
While 5 times per day is a little more than average (somewhere between 2-4), it is certainly not abnormal. If your movements are well formed (not loose or gassy), this may actually be a sign of a very healthy G.I. tract! 4 days without a movement on the hand seems awfully slow to me, particularly for a younger person. The most important determinants are naturally the amount of water and the type and quantity of food that one consumes. Other factors may include; medications (narcotics, anticonvulsants, tranquilizers), the amount of exercise or physical activity (facilitates peristalsis) and certain emotional states (some have linked depression to constipation).
Again, if these are normal bowel movements, I wouldn't be seeking to slow them down. If you are in are in good health, 5 times per day may simply be what is normal for you!
