I have been using Vaseline on my Aneros devices for a couple years now and am looking for a more healthy alternative. I always coat my massagers with Vaseline and add a little water based lube over top. It works very well and together with a syringe of water based lube keeps my massager lubricated for hours.
Since I use my devices 3-4 times a week I am a little concerned about the long-term health effects of using Vaseline.
I am looking at using shea butter to replace the Vaseline. Will unrefined shea butter coat my device and last a long time similar to Vaseline? Will it rub onto and coat my device like Vaseline or is it a harder substance like soft wax?
What type of shea butter should I try? I see it advertised as raw/unrefined white/yellow; sometimes raw and unrefined which makes no sense as they are different types, no?
busdrvr I don't have experience with shea butter but use coconut oil in Boy Butter. I like it a lot as a lube. It does not dry out and lasts as long as my sessions.
busdrvr I have been using virgin coconut oil and unrefined Shea butter on the tool for many years now. It works wonderful and doesn't dry out. I heat up the coconut oil in micro only till melted and pour into a mini ice cube tray. You know the ones that make a 1/2" x 1/2" square. Then put the tray in the freezer. After solid, pop them out and store in a cool place like a basement. I have found that just one cube is the perfect size amount for a session. Then coat the Aneros tool with the Shea butter and your ready to ride.
Coconut oil and glycerin can have a laxative effect. Some people might advise against this, but my preferred choice is Crisco vegetable. It's basically just pure soybean oil. It's thick and long lasting. You can just melt a bit and pour it into a kitchen syringe (without the needle obviously), and inject as much as you need directly inside of you. Then you can push a bit out onto the device and spread it around with your finger and you're good to go. I have yet to try shea butter though, so it may be better for this purpose

Yes, it will last nearly as long as Vaseline but you may have to warm it up a bit to get it to coat as easily as Vaseline does at room temperature.

You'll want to use the raw/unrefined shea butter because "To cut it short, differences between unrefined and refined shea butter are the scent, color and benefits. ... Refined shea butter has been chemically altered to remove shea butters natural scent, is bleach white in color and retains only a small portion of its natural healing properties."
Personally, I am also concerned about the uptake of the various chemicals in commercial 'personal lubricants'. Since I've developed a sensitivity to the glycerin found in many of the commercial lubricants, I've switched to using natural oil based lubricants such as a 50%-50% mixture of almond oil and shea butter or a 67% coconut oil - 33% shea butter mixture or the 'Natural Jelly' formulation. These compounds are safe for use with both the plastic and silicone Aneros models.

@Spectre , you may wish to reconsider using Crisco as your lube of choice. The number one reason being the soy oil used may be compromising your hormonal balance. Please read the article Two Key Reasons that Make Soy Products Unhealthy for Male Hormonal Health. Crisco did change their formula a few years ago to get rid of the trans fats but unfortunately those got converted to saturated fats. The amount of these saturated fats may not be of concern to you but it is something to consider.
Good Vibes to You !
You're going to have to try both. Some people find out that one dries up faster than the other, because that's just the way their kind and other membranes work. I like vaseline, blended with something called Aster Infusions. It's jojoba oil plus an essential oil of one kind or another (my favourite's the Fig oil mix).
@goldenboy mentioned Boy Butter. I haven't used it myself, but lubes marketed as "Masturbation creams" are great. I like 'Grizzly Bear Paw' the best. Stroke 29 from Gun Oil can also work, but it's not already slippery from the start. It's designed to be thick out of the tube, and turns more into a liquid as you use it. Both of these have all kinds of good things like nut oils and added Vitamin E and so on. Not so good, maybe, if you have nut allergies, so read the labels.
Ive experimented with many different lubes and it has come down to health and lube properties. The safest water based lubes and most effective seems to be sliquid sassy or hybrid with silicone called sliquid silk. These seem to be the best ones that dont contain harmful parabens and glycerin. And the hybrid water, silicone contains only a small amount o f silicon, so doesnt harm silicon toys.
The above seem to be the best consumer products that i have found but water base still seems to dry up after a bit so now i exclusively use combination of pure raw unrefined shea butter and cocnut oil. Coconut oil alone gets to thin and shea butter alone is too sticky and thick. Combining the 2 in a 75% shea, 25% coconut is a perfect combination of smooth and silkiness that lasts for hours with no reaaplication needed.
i scoop some shea in a tupperware and put it in hot water which makes it liquid, then get cocnut oil liquid and mix in a 75/25 ratio. Put it in fridge to harden then keep it at room temp with a perfect cosistancy.
the best shea butter i found is the cleopatra brand
I've settled into using grape seed oil. Very little scent. Almost as slippery as silicon, works perfectly for a 1-2 hour session. Easy to apply with a lube injector.

I highly recommend Shea butter alone. Although I'm still a rookie, I've played around with lots of lubes in my day, and I love the versatility and feel of Shea. At room temp, it's stiff when you scoop it out, about like peanut butter from the fridge, but after a few moments of rubbing a little between fingers, it emulsifies beautifully, and stays that way. I put a bit on my finger, a tiny glob in my rectum, then work things around until things are nice and warm. I also put a fine coating on my toys, and rub that around too. Everything gets warm and slippery, but without that industrial thick feeling of vaseline, or the goopy muted response from anal lubes, things with glycerin, etc. Also, no matter how long your session, Shea butter will last throughout- apply and forget. It stays put better than oils, too, and even though it gets slippery, you don't need much.
I particularly like the response I get with Shea. Because it's not too thick, it's a bit like driving a good sports car; you want to feel the road, with all its bumps and curves, to corner more accurately. Get yourself any organic Shea anywhere. It's got an odd but somehow appealing nutty scent to it, which I've come to associate with sexual pleasure. Try it, and let us know where you get with it. Vroom, vroom!
I use the Now brand organic shea butter and wont switch to anything else, I started with some lubes, vaseline and coconut oil originally and even tried the condom trick but nothing compares to the feel of shea and no need for reapplication, the toy just slides with ease. I have from time to time used j-lube it too works well but is messier than shea, and I think I get a nice moisturizing side affect from the shea
