I am considering buying a couple used devices from someone I do not know. I am getting a good deal for the helix classic and progasm classic. I am wondering if this is safe and if the toys can be fully sanitized, or is this a terrible idea?

Personally, that doesn't sound like a good idea to me. However, I don't see any reason why they couldn't be fully sanitized. I know the standard is soap and water, but if it were me I would want to use something stronger like a diluted solution of bleach. I'm not sure if the Aneros would be adversely affected by something like this though. Maybe email Aneros and ask them for their take.

I think its fine as long as you sterilize them before use. There are many ways to sterilize them.

Chlorine bleach will mildly attack the acetal plastic of the "classic" models. Wiping the surface would be fine, but don't soak it.

See the wiki's entry on hygiene. Going beyond the simple measures doesn't provide useful benefit.

There's really not much to worry about. Unless there's a cut on the surface where dirt could accumulate, the aneros is not at all microbe-friendly.

@PSLabs That is what I was worried about regarding bleach. I mean I doubt you would catch anything, because any STD's aren't going to survive that long outside the body. It would just be more of a personal hangup for me sharing something that has been in a stranger's bum.

@orgazmoMany diseases could be transmitted by poor hygiene, not just STDs.

I'm on board with you, though. Rationally, I know there's minimal risk, but I would still be uncomfortable with second-hand (second-butt?) toys. It's a fine product, and there are limits to my frugality.

this is overthink. you use restaurant forks, right? are you scared of catching diseases from them?

What do you think is going to live on the device?

Just clean it with soap and water. If you really need to, put it briefly in boiling water.

I could imagine some concern if you pulled the device out of somebody's bum and put it right in yours.

@darwin Yes, I know the risk would be almost nonexistent. It is just more of a personal hangup. I don't even like sharing the same drink or plate of food with someone I know well. So if @joejoebanks420 is comfortable with it and cleans it well before first use, I doubt there would be any risks with it.

Aside from the aesthetic aspects and your use of a "non-virgin" toy I see no issue. Here are some practical and impractical methods: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterilization_%28microbiology%29

You should be able to adequately sanitize any of the Aneros products, assuming that there are no cracks or deep fractures that could cause structural failure after exposure to high temperature. As noted by @PSLabs, chlorine solutions under high temperature will attack plastics like Acetal (DuPont notes this in their 'Delrin' data sheets).

I've routinely run all of my Aneros tools (including a Helix-syn in the top rack of our dishwasher with no ill effect. That seems effective to remove the 'scum' that forms on some Silicone toys when they are used with Vaseline. However, there was a note in the Aneros User Blog early this year that the dishwasher .wasn't a good place for the Eupho-syn.

I understand joe's concern. I even worry when I buy sex toys online cause I think what if this isn't new and has been used before?

When I got my peridise I sprayed medical disinfectant on it which says it kills viruses. I sprayed it on and let it on there for a few minutes and then also rubbed it clean and washed it with water. But I still don't really dare to use it without condom.

Can somebody tell me if medical disinfectants which contain mostly alcohol can attack the peridise material?

@joejoebanks420 Ok Most of my aneros toys have been given to me second hand by two people on this forum but i did buy a few. One bloke i talk with all the time so feel i know him even though i have never met him. The other I really dont know one bit. When the toys arrived I washed them with hot water and soap and used a nail brush as well over there surface but then I boiled them in a pan on the stove for 1 hour. I did not have a pressure cooker at the time but would have used it if i did. Using a pressure cooker is like Autocalving. (doctors do this to sterilize stuff)
The silicone and the classic and the stainless steel was not affected.
I have not tried a helix syn or eupho syn as they are two different materials and heat may cause uneaven expansion damage.
Boil your classics for 1 hour and you can feel safe you wont catch anything.

Is boiling better than medical disinfectant sprays?
