Hello, this is my first post. I am susceptible to chronic prostate infections, and have found that periodic prostate massage has been very helpful in preventing and treating mild infections. I thought that I would share my experience so far and ask some questions.

For me, DIY prostate massage has been more effective than the standard antibiotic treatments in treating mild prostatitis. Antibiotics seem to clear it up for a short time, but it tends to come right back after treatment. I also don’t like the idea of flooding my body with antibiotics for long periods of time. The treatment for prostatitis is more severe than the treatment for an anthrax exposure. My urologist was horrified at the idea of DIY prostate massage, but I realize that there are a variety of opinions among experienced urologists. Based on my personal experiences and on what I’ve read, I am still continuing prostate massage and working on ways to improve it as a treatment. I tend to occasionally perform massage as a preventative treatment, and will perform it almost daily for a week or so if I feel any soreness at all returning. I have had zero serious infections since I started DIY massage almost 4 years ago. I notice an immediate improvement in urine flow and reduction in pressure afterwards.

I have had good results using a slender vibrator with a tilted egg at the tip. It can be very vigorous, and the vibrations seem to be effective in relaxing the area. I can also reach the surrounding areas very well. I have also been experimenting using a few Aneros models. I initially got the MGX and Helix, and recently got the Progasm. They all have their pros can cons when compared to the hand held vibrator.

A key advantage of the Aneros models is they work “hands free." While this isn’t as important has whether it is effective, it does make it easier to deliver a long, gentle massage, rather than a shorter more vigorous massage that I usually get with the hand held vibrator. The contraction exercises with the Aneros have also been more helpful than the vibrator for improving muscle tone in the variety of muscles in this region. Being hands free also allows me to use it during regular sex with my wife, which is also a nice perk.

In theory, the gentle massage from the Aneros might be safer, though I have found that a fairly vigorous massage has been essential in the treatment and maintenance against infection. Therefore, I have been rotating use between an Aneros models and the vibrator. I get the vigorous treatment from the vibrator, and the muscle toning from gentler treatment from the Aneros.

I have not yet experienced a Super Orgasm with any of the Aneros models. This would be a wonderful bonus, but it’s not the primary reason that I use the Aneros. I have considered removing the handle from the MGX in order to allow it to move more easily. Maybe I’ll get a Super Orgasm, but it also might allow firmer contact with the prostate.

The MGX and Helix are very similar in effectiveness for me. The Progasm is very different. There some things that I like and dislike about the Progasm. The Progasm seems to press harder while in certain positions, which I consider to be a good thing for my purposes. However, it doesn’t seem to quite fit my body well, and feels a bit too long when fully inserted. It’s as if it is pressing against the opposite side of colon beyond the prostate, and the pressure there is slightly uncomfortable. However, the P-tab won’t press against my perineum unless it’s fully inserted. I do really like feeling of the K-tab P-tab combination when it is fully inserted. I have wondered if the Program might be modified to better fit me, so I took the following photo in order to compare the dimensions of the models:

In the photo in the link above, the devices are aligned as if they are fully inserted where the P-tab and handle/K-tab are flush against the dark line on the left. This would correspond to figure 2 below where both the P-tab and handle/K-tab are pressed against the body:
From: http://www.aneros.com/howitworks.php

Interestingly, the K-tab on the Progasm would seem to inhibit the bulb at the tip from pressing against the prostate when the P-tab is pressing against the perineum. I guess that this isn’t a problem for anyone.

I also noted that the part of the Progasm that penetrates the body (limited by the P-tab and K-tab) isn’t much longer than the MGX and Helix models. I wondered whether the Progasm might be improved if I were to cut off the bulb, but the photos indicate it would likely be too short if I did that. I also noticed that there is more device sticking out of the body on the Progasm than the other models.

I noticed that all three models have a primary bump at the tip and a secondary bump inward. Figure 2 in the link above suggests that the secondary bump may be for the cowper’s gland. Is this true? There is more distance between the two bumps in the Progasm.

I summary, use both a small vibrator and Aneros models for the prevention and treatment of mild prostatitis. The vibrator gives a firm and vigorous massage, which appears to be essential. The Aneros devices give a gentler massage, and also helps to tone the muscles in this region. I am currently considering modifying them to see if this will improve mobility and increase firm contact with the prostate. I am considering removing the handle from the MGX and possibly the Helix. I have a love-hate relationship with the Progasm. It seem to press hardest against the prostate, though it doesn’t seem to fit my body well and feels too long.

I would welcome any other experiences and suggestions that anyone else may have.

I was wondering if you could go a step further to explain or expond on why your uro is taking such a negative stand on your self milking.

The only thing I can think of is he might is concerned that if there is cancer or other type of infection, the milking can cause the infection to move out of the prostate and into the bloodstream.. What is your take on this. Please share more with the forum if you care to.

To the best of my recollection, my urologist’s exact words were “Never put anything into your rectum! That’s just asking for trouble!” His objection seemed to be more about the whole concept of putting anything in there, and not necessarily that prostate massage was risky. He also said that prostate massage was something that doctors did in the “old days,” where they did it about once a week and “it would seem to feel better for a while, but it didn’t really do anything.”

I have read the concerns about the potential for spreading cancer (if cancer exists), or causing blood poisoning when there is an infection. I’m not sure how significant these risks are. I don’t think that I would do massage if I knew that I had cancer, and I would recommend taking an antibiotic if the infection was significant and acute. I’m pretty sure that I had been taking an antibiotic for over a week when I first tried massage during the acute infection that I had.

There are reports of a doctor in the Philippines that developed a very successful prostate massage treatment for prostatitis. I’m sorry that I don’t have any links or names, but I think that it would be very easy to find. I think that his method was to use antibiotics along with daily massages, where the doctor performed very firm massages with his finger for about two weeks. If I recall correctly, one of his findings was that the massage needed to be carried out daily (or every other day) for about two weeks in order for this treatment to be effective. Once a week would not be enough.

One question for using massage for treating prostatitis is whether it is best to ejaculate before or after the massage. Part of the theory is that the massage forces out infected material that has been trapped. By giving the massage after ejaculation, only the trapped material remains in the prostate during the massage. However, a theoretical advantage of ejaculating after the massage, is that the ejaculation can help clear out infected material after it has been loosened by the massage. I had severe burning of the urethra after the massage and ejaculation, so I know that some of the stuff in there was nasty. I have also noticed a difference in the massage characteristics when I am aroused versus unaroused. The pelvic floor is firmer when aroused, and the prostate has something to push against. If I feel any signs of infection, I do the following in one session: 1) Massage while unaroused. 2) Massage while aroused 3) Massage while ejaculating, 4) Massage after ejaculation, & 5) Drink plenty of water.

Hi friday77,

I am not a big fan of the Progasm but is a real champ for others. It also needs a greater amount of lube. I recommend coconut or olive oil, by the way.

I called and chatted with the Aneros folks directly months back about several questions. During the chat, the rear tab came up and it is there to contact (stimulate?) an area that correponds to an "energy" area in tantric sex. Whether this is the only reason it is there, I do not know.

So, removing it may not be that big of a deal.

I would like to recommend that you purchase the Maximus and give that a whirl. Given the issues stated, I think you would be very happy with it.

No rear tab or not, the Progasm is just plain big and long. I do think the "pointy" tip can be pretty aggressive. A personal opinion...

I hope that is helpful.

Virg

I have the MGX and the Helix.

I wondered why the different feelings when inserted because they are similiar in size. The models on the graph paper sure do show how it each one sits in the rectum when seated..

Thanks for the comparison pics.

Update:

After using both the MGX and Helix more, I definitely feel that (for me) the MGX is more effective than the Helix for therapeutic massage for treating prostatitis. This contradicts what I expected, since the Helix is “aggressively shaped” and is supposed to give a more “aggressive” prostate massage. For me, the MGX just seems to press against the right body parts more effectively. Your experience may differ.

MGX Modification (the good and the bad): Several months ago, I clipped the tail (handle) off of my MGX model. I trimmed it in a manner similar to example B shown in this thread. . The device definitely inserts itself more deeply now, and this significantly increases the pressure on both the prostate and on the perineum.

The good:

  • The extra pressure and depth does seem to be more effective at therapeutic massage.
  • It also seems noticeably more pleasurable.
  • The handle has always seemed obnoxiously large to me, and it’s nice not to have it interfere while sitting down. With the handle gone, it now no longer interferes with movement when my legs are closed. I get the most intense massage while lying on my back, knees straight, and my legs closed. This is more enjoyable now that the handle is gone.

The bad:

  • The extra pressure on the perineum now may be too much. It feels really good at first, but it feels a bit numbing and irritating after a while, as if the circulation at the perineum is being restricted. I wonder if it could be improved by placing a cap over the p-tab so that the pressure is spread out over a larger area.
  • The device now slightly flops over to one side without the handle. I have read complaints on this forum from people who have removed the handle from the Helix. I haven’t yet seen any complaints about the MGX, but it definitely does happen to some extent. I wonder if a modification like example D would be better.

Tilting of the modified MGX:I’m not 100% convinced that the tilting is bad.

While using the modified MGX (before I realized that the MGX was tilting to one side), I noticed I got significantly increased pleasure if I slightly twisted my hips. (very slight twisting; mostly just flexing the muscles). The increased pleasure occurred during contraction and relaxation. It was definitely a “wow” sensation. Out of curiosity, I got a mirror to see what was going on. The first thing that I observed what the MGX definitely inserts itself very deeply without the handle. Second, I discovered that the MGX was crooked without the handle to hold it straight. If it was sitting to the left, I could pull is out a few mm and then place it so that it sat to the right. It was impossible to keep it in the middle. I also noticed that by twisting my hips, I could move it more to the left or to the right. Curiously, the “wow” feeling occurred when it was sitting on the left and when I twisted my hips which caused it to move further to the left.

I’m not exactly sure what is going on inside, but I wonder if the increased pleasure (from the hip twisting) is due to massage on the sides of the prostate, rather than the center. From a therapeutic perspective, massaging from the side may possibly offer an advantage over massaging from the center. I read a description of the procedure used by a doctor in the Philippines for treating prostatitis, and his procedure included firmly pressing and rolling his finger over the prostate so that the outer lobes were massaged. A description on this website http://www.chronicprostatitis.com/massage.html suggests that massaging inward from the sides may help drainage.

I wonder if a new V-shaped aneros would be effective.

I am considering getting the “classic” aneros from HIH to see if this model is more effective than the MGX for therapeutic massage for prostatitis. The classic version is a little deeper than the MGX and has small nodules which may enhance massage to the sides.

Progasm: I still have mixed feelings about the progasm. In some ways, it seems excessively large. It’s like a large blunt instrument, and it’s hard to get intense massage because the pressure is spread out over a large area. On the other hand, the width of the device does seem to enhance massage to the side lobes of the prostate. The last time I used it, seemed to do a good job of alleviating pain from mild epididymitis that I was experiencing.
