At the end of my following up for my epididymal cyst, i took the courage to ask my uro about his opinion on prostate massage.
he seemed neutral, neither encourage nor discourage this practice. Mention that while it is not a normal typical activity, it is okay to do so once a while, gently. He is more concerned about cross-contamination that increases the risk of infection for both me and my wife. He also did mention to not use more than 1 finger to prevent injury to the anal sphincter that will give me trouble when i get older. hint:incontinence
So take home message is that no harm having prostate massaged as long as I use common sense and being cautious.(LOL i think that applied to every single thing)
I have a large cyst as well. I asked mine and he said it's not related to the prostate at all. But now I'm confused.... does this mean it's time to stop using aneros?
kind of weird. after I use mine, the next few days my urine stream kind of just trickles out, not a strong flow. I am wondering if I am using it too strong or if it need to lighten up on the pressure. just insert it and relax.?? I am 54. dr. says I have enlarged prostate. been large for a couple years. 3 yrs ago dr. gave me antibiotics because PSA was high. it must have been an infection somehow. but it worked PSA went down. a few times when I took a shower I inserted my thumb, felt great. I had precum leaking when I got out of shower. I really hope I am not hurting my prostate. I don't really see any documentation that prostate massage actually helps shrink a prostate. ???+
Also seems like every time I insert aneros or my finger I have to have bowel movement very soon after. any Ideas?
A couple years back I asked both my family physician and my urologist about prostate massage and prostate devices such as aneros. Both advised that it is something that should be done either by oneself or a your marriage [or equivalent] partner. For DIY, the aneros line is about as safe as you can get, just don't overdo it and if there is any sign of discomfort or pain - STOP. Water based lubes are only safe for short duration use as they tend to dry and get sticky. Both thought that use might be helpful with BPH but might aggravate as well. Its not that use will shrink the prostate, its that it may relieve it of prostate congestion. Thus, an interrupted session might aggravate symptoms while a completed session [release of prostatic fluid] may relieve symptoms.
My Aneros journey started shortly after my wife and I attended a "Sex for Seniors" workshop, given by the Uro Dept of a local Hospital. Punchline was that the G-Spot and Sensory nerves surrounding the Prostate mature from the same tissues... therefore... etc. That experience led to our visiting a local Adult Bookstore where the counter clerk sold us a Helix Classic. During my next Uro appointment I asked the same questions as have @veon and @oldernewb.
Massage answer(s) from my Uro: "... We used to do Prostate Massages as a routine office procedure which added about $ 30 (in 1999 dollars) to the price of the office visit. It's seldom performed now because most Insurance Plans will not cover it." ... In a related answer... about 10% of his clients have regular prostate massage either by a mate, partner or themselves, using a massage tool, either static or with a vibe. About half of those use a massage tool rather than a human finger. He is OK with the Aneros and HIH lines of tools but likes the fact that an "experienced and educated finger" is better able to judge the applied location and force. He cautions against any massage when the prostate is inflamed, suffering an infection or has Prostate Cancer. He suggested that my (significantly) enlarged prostate get a combination of massage and a prescribed medication, an alfa-blocker. After just over 10 years of that combination I've been able to cease the alfa-blocker and continue with just regular Aneros sessions along with regular ejaculation, sound diet and regular physical exercise. (He's not into semen retention--a real, 'use it or loose it' guy). My PSA has slowly changed, downward. I haven't yet visited this year so don't have a current extimate on my prostate volume. @ten_s_nut is the poster guy for a shrinking Prostate. I think I may be joining him this year.
He suggests doing the massage while relaxing in a warm tub bath or taking a warm sitz-bath beforehand. A warm saline rinse (just a briefly held Colt bulb full) will also help relax the prostate prior to massage. He's OK with the slow, cycling, flex-relax-flex-relax routine in the HIH.com instructions.
@bambi... Sometimes (maybe once a month -- about once in 6 or 7 sessions) an extended or aggressive Aneros session will result in a slower urine stream on the following day. Usually I'm back to "full flow" on the second or third day following that session. Perhaps it might be worthwhile to see if one particular tool or technique leads to this "slower flow" result however it's not a sufficient issue for me to "study" it and degrade any of the pleasure and fun from my Aneros play.
Regarding the Pre-cum flow. I think your thumb is probably applying some pressure to your Cowpers glands rather than the prostate. OTOH, I do trigger pre-cum flow from just mental stimulation (sexual attraction etc.) and you might be doing the same.
Sounds like you are experiencing normal peristalsis from inserting something into your rectum before a normal bowel movement. Suggestions would be to just wait patiently until the peristaltic action is over. I'm into a quick, very small rinse with a shower-shot before my Aneros session and am careful in not overdoing it so that doesn't involve my colon. Most guys here don't bother with a rinse and/or have mates/partners who are not overly fastidious.
You might get your Uro's opinion on deformation hazards to your Anal Sphincter. I'd bet that toys resembling the girth of anything you might "pass naturally" are OK. Lube wisely and, 'remember to breathe' as you relax. I've not heard of any Aneros/HIH user being unable to accommodate a well lubed insertion of these toys.
I think my Uro's thoughts are a 'spot-on' match with @oldernewb 's observations.

thanks for the sharing guys
to be honest, I am in sort of in a dilemma few days before my follow up whether to throw this kind of question to my uro. I am afraid that his reaction/advice will be the end of my prostate play journey. Luckily, it is a good news to me that my uro remained neutral to the least. I am not too surprised too as I am coming from a conservative culture, where I would not bring up this kind of discussion with my friends, or even a doc if I did not make an effort to do so
