Just wondering if any of you experience gas for a day or two after your sessions. I'm trying to figure out if it's the act of using an anal toy or if my lube (ID Glide) is causing the gas. Thanks 🙂
Hello Valhalla41, 🙂
You are likely experiencing a reaction to the glycerin component in ID Glide that most water based lubes use. This is a more milder reaction to the “urge to purge” that a lot of us have (including me) when injecting glycerin based lubes into the rectum. Have a read in the Aneros Wiki about types of lubes:
My preference is to use 100% unrefined shea butter. Particularly the Now Foods (Now Solutions) brand. It lubricates much better than water based lubes since it is a natural oil, does not dry out nor need re-application, and is a natural. Here's the main shea butter thread:
http://www.aneros.com/forum/f5/unrefined-shea-butter-how-much-12757/
But other options would be non-glycerin water based lubes like Slippery Stuff Gel, or Astroglide Natural. There are likely other in this category that I can't remember. A silicone based lube is an option. In addition, other users have tried different vegetable oils, including coconut oil successfully.
And there is also a couple of home made options. One of them being Rumel's Natural Jelly:

And another one being flax seed lube:

Hope this helps. 🙂

"All natural" is not necessarily good. Hemlock and Deadly Nightshade are "all natural", as are nicotine, caffeine and cocaine.
Thanks for the helpful post Love_is. I've now started researching for a safe alternative because all of the information I read makes it seem like over the counter lubes (the typical brands) are unknown in terms of safety long term. It's kind of making me paranoid (whether rightfully so or not).
Astroglide Natural looked like a good alternative except I've read certain articles about it possible causing damage in addition to questionable replication of the HIV virus (not that I have HIV but just the mention of the virus in the article is enough to make you scared).
Am I being unreasonably frightened? Astroglide Natural looks like a great choice because it's readily available at CVS and Glycerine free.
Sylk looks like an excellent all-natural alternative but it has to be ordered online and I don't know if anyone has had experience with it (gets good reviews). Also, although it is free of most troublesome ingredients, it does have vegetable glycerine in it and I'm not sure if that will have the same effect as the regular gylcerine found in my ID Glide.
Anyone that can shine some light on the situation would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Astroglide Glycerin and Paraben free is another possibility.
I don't inject lube, or enema for that matter--just a minimal amount of lubricant at the anus and on the toy--and never experience flatulence issues.
Hello, Val.
The Aneros Vice does seem to pump air into my rectum sometimes when it is really fucking me hard. Afterwards, when I remove the Vice, the air farts out. I have never had that effect with any of the smaller Aneros models.
Best Regards.

I had issues like this before, and when I stopped blasting in a ton of lube, that made a huge difference for me. Lube is important, but I was definitely going overboard with it.
I experience a mild flatulence after using Aneros, and yes, I use ID Glide gel. But the bottle has nearly ended, I'll use the rest for my Fleshlight as soon as my next bottle arrives. Using LOTS of lube seems to magnify the issue.
My next lube will be Sliquid Sassy. I've read some very good reviews of that thing. The main attraction for me is that it's water-based (toys !) and lasts longer (and is natural to the point of being vegan-compatible, which I'm not). twlltin has a good point about Nightshade. However, I think a natural lube is more likely to be devoid of side effects. Synthetic substances can have high concentration of "stuff" that only occurs in small quantities in nature. I'll let you know how the lube works. ID Glide might be great, but for pussy.
I've recently read that silicone-based lubes are traditionally safer than some research suggests water-based lubes are in terms of breaking down the lining inside our bodies. Is it safe to use a silicone-based lube with the different types of Aneros' (I think my black progasm is made of a different material than my helix).
Anyone have any good experience with these?
Because it seems that so many different lubes have such different effectiveness for different people, I'm starting to think that a lube's effectiveness has a lot to do with the way it interacts with our individual body chemistries. Different things work well for different people--the only way to know what'll work for you is to try stuff out.
I agree with you MindTravel.
The more I research the topic, the more I find there there is no perfect lubrication.
Water-based lubes can damage the membranes of cells lining the rectum and increase susceptibility to other problems.
Silicone-based lubes have not shown the same issues as water-based but are not guaranteed to be "toy safe". Also, there are no long term studies to show how damaging these chemicals you put into your body can be. The longer the names, the more I'm afraid of them (the ingredients).
If you poke around a research even very natural lubricants like Carrageenan, you will find articles saying how toxic the main ingredient is (also the name of the product).
Yes, I understand that if you research anything on the internet you will eventually find some distressing news but there is quite a bit of it on the subject. I'm surprised more R&D doesn't go into testing how healthy these things are. I guess part of it is due to the taboo in our society and lack of interest.
Unfortunately for me, this is making it very difficult to enjoy my 2 Aneros's because my mind has been taken up recently with trying to find a safe alternative.
airbag- Sliquid Sassy has been unusable for me. I read all these great reviews, and immediately bought two of them. When they arrived I was quick to discover that it DID cause not only flatulence, but an IMMEDIATE desire to defecate. It's gotta be the glycerin. I'm a die hard user of PROBE Thick and Rich. I highly recommend it.
I hope this doesn't turn into another lube thread...

That's worrying. But at the shop I buy from, Sliquid Sassy has "glycerin-free" in its name !
Ingredients:
Purified Water, Plant Cellulose (from Cotton), Cyamopsis (Guar Conditioners), Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid. 100% Vegan.
- Does not contain aspartame
- Does not contain glycerine
- Does not contain parabens
On a second thought, yes it makes sense that water-based lubricants might interact in some way. After a long bath your skin, especially on fingers, is wrinkled because water escapes your organism. There were occasional cases of a children dying from dehydration on swimming pool (drink something beforehand !).
pnoman, I hate to tell you this, but Probe does have glycerin in its ingredient list.
I'm with Pnoman on this one. As soon as I put the Sassy in my rectum I get the instant urge to evacuate my bowels...almost painfully so. I never found a single water based lubricant that my body could agree with. Unrefined Shea butter is the only thing I've found to be comfortable as of yet and as a bonus it stays slick for a long time.
So at the risk of this turning into another "lube thread," is there any research demonstrating how safe or unsafe it is to use unrefined shea butter as an anal lube?
I'm quickly running out of options here and with the plethora of harmful ingredients in almost all over the counter lubes, I'd like to find something to be able to enjoy my aneros again.
Sorry more about lubes.
I bought a bottle of Sliquid H20 recently only used it a few times but seems ok no urge to purge.
Bought from Lovehoney here.
If you scroll down there is a video with the boss of Sliquid.
Okay, I've tried Sliquid Sassy and I'm disappointed. It doesn't irritate me or cause any "urge to purge". It's thick, odorless reasonably slippery. However, it dries out pretty quickly ! Pretty soon I had to work my kegels very hard to achieve anything. And when it dries out it's slightly sticky. It's hard or impossible to have a pleasant session with this lube. It wasn't an issue with my Fleshlight.
Verdict: might work in cases where there's a 80 kg man attached to the thing being inserted, but not worth it with Aneros. ID Glide might cause slight flatulence for me, but a smaller amount of it worked better than this lube.
I'm going to run out of lube pretty soon, and I haven't made my mind on what to buy
I'm not sure what to try either. I haven't used my aneros in weeks because all the negative I've read about lubes has scared me away from it. It's really unfortunate because it was enjoyable and I'd like to get back to it but I haven't found anything that makes me comfortable yet. Is there ANYTHING you can stick up there without adverse effects or is all hope lost without long term research 🙁
Val;
As long as your session is 2 hours or less, you can use Walnut Oil by itself, which is actually GOOD for you. It has Omega 3 in it. You might not absorb a whole lot during your session, but what you do absorb will be healthful. Around here, in NorCal, Walnut Oil is sold in supermarkets on the top shelf above the ordinary vegetable oils. Costs $10 a pint. That will last you over a year even if you use 1cc every day like I do.
Best Regards,
Dave
Val,
Most of the edible oils like Walnut, Almond, Olive, Sunflower, Saflower, Coconut and Castor are all safe in the rectum unless you have a tree nut allergy. If that's the case just avoid the tree-nut oils and even consider Corn Oil or Canola Oil.
In Ayurvedic Medicine (traditional medicine in India) oils (usually Sesame, Sunflower or Olive) are infused with herbs and used for Basti (small retention enemas). Ayurveda and Basti have hundreds of years of experienced practice. All the oils are edible and well proven for rectal use on multi-millions of patients.
I've used all three with my Aneros and found the Sesame Oil was a bit too aromatic for me -- very distracting during an Aneros Session, butt it will definitley "grab" your attention. I also like Almond Oil and Coconut Oil -- the later 'cooked' with Shea Nut Butter.
I like Castor Oil (doesn't act as a purgative for me) and find it similar to Silicone Oil in viscosity and slipperiness.
I think this is the ultimate test for anal lube. If it's safe to eat, then it's safe for anal play. It absorbs so much and aneros sessions are quite long.
I would think that line of thought is correct.
However, what's always plagued me is this: your rectum is used in disposing of your body's waste. By it's very nature, it is harmful to your body and that's why it is getting rid of it. Yet IT spends a lot of time in the same place you're putting your Aneros so maybe the anus walls aren't so fragile after all.
I agree with Valhalla...

I think the above is a conclusion that's quite logical and easy to live with.
Just for grins I gave my fave Shea+Coconut blend the "Robert Cheeseborough test" and ate a teaspoon of it shortly after Airbag's post hit my web browser. Now, the next day, there are no noted ill effects and no sudden need to swing like a monkey in a Coconut Palm. I pasturize my lube so am not concerned about the usual pathogens that might be in the native products. 🙂
Addressing the HIV/HPV concerns: The mention of these viruses seems to periodically generate concern whenever anal lube tests are discussed. The mentions of HIV and HPV in lube tests ought not be of concern here. Classic safe-sex is our first-line of defense and the only lube concern is picking one that doesn't irritate the tissues or damage a condom or other barrier.
Here's why HIV and HPV prevention is mentioned in association with lube testing. It's about the money... The money supporting tests of anal lube is mostly aimed at identifying or developing lubes that can safely and effectively carry antiviral agents to fight HIV and perhaps HPV in the anus and rectum. This is in response to the disappointing results from spremacides (like Nonoxynol-9) that were first thought to prevent HIV infections but instead were found to be a source of tissue irritation in the anus, rectum and colon. That in turn made many guys susceptable to a variety of pathogens (bacteria and aggressive yeastsw) that they would normally have fought off.
One major issue: what works as a good vaginal lube isn't necessarily a good choice for the rectum and vice versa. Pay your money and pick your pizen.
@Val: Dame nature has made us tough. The literature and anecdotal evidence is fairly strong in favor of a high-fiber diet of vegetables, fruit and natural roughage to balance out burgers and steak. That will sweep out residual lube and pave the way for repair and healthy cell growth. It also helps maintain a good flora that will counter ugly waste products.
My system cannot tolerate glycerin, not even a little. With glycerin my session would only last 10 or so minutes before I would have to remove the stimulate and then my body clears out the glycerin, with subsequent evacuations which cancels the session completely.
I have used petroleum jelly and flax seed gel (see threads about this). I have not tried shea butter or a recent entry regarding a condom filled with a glycerin lubricant (it sounds promising).
Remember, your rectum does absorb fluids which is why I would recommend flax seed gel over all others as it is systematic compatable with the human body.
I've never heard of Flaxseed Gel. Only the homemade concoction using flaxseed and water.
I have to say that Shea butter has me most intrigued right now. I miss being able to use my Aneros. It's been over a month 🙁
I had a strong urge to use my Progasm the other night after not using it for a WHILE. So I indulged and tried 100% virgin olive oil. I'm happy to say that it felt quite nice. No adverse affects like excess gas when I used ID Glide. The only negative as I'm sure most of you are aware is that it stains and is hard to clean up. I have to come up with a system to avoid this. Perhaps Shea Butter is the way to go.
Okay, if it's safe to eat then it's safe to anal play... mostly. But a good point has been made about bacteria and yeast. Many things that are safe to eat might not be safe for anal, because of the nourishment it provides. A silly example, but plain sugar doesn't cause any (short term; long term there's a link between sugar consumption and cancer) nasty effects when eaten. But you want to brush your teeth soon. So if anyone was in doubt, sugar doesn't make a good anal lube ;-);-).
