Hey Everyone,
I screwed up. As the story goes, I made a batch of the Natural Lube that has been featured on this forum (Shea butter, Coconut Oil, and Bee's wax) and it worked great! However, a bit of water got into the mix. Over time, with my moist climate, the mixture started to smell a bit. So I figured I would reheat the batch to kill off anything that might be in the mix, and to remove the water. So I got the batch to a liquid on the stove (with boiling water) and moved the good stuff to a new container. I still could see water at the bottom of the mix so I put the batch into the oven to evaporate the water. I started at a low temperature but got impatient and moved it to 320* When I got back I saw no more water, but the whole mix was smoking!!!! Took it out and let it cool. After it was solid again, the whole mixture was darker, with bits of burnt flecks on the bottom and it now smells worse. It is, however, still slippery.
Do you think there is any recovering from this? Could it, perhaps, still be used? Is the batch now unsafe?
why not just buy lube its a lot easier and safer
DonkeyLover,
I am an enthusiastic supporter of the 'Natural Jelly' formula. I now just use almond oil, bees wax and vitamin E. Since it is so inexpensive to make, I would suggest you just throw that batch away and make up a fresh batch to be on the safe side.
P.S. You should be aware that high heat can have catalytic effects on organic oils, altering their chemical composition, just as the "cracking process" does to crude oil in refineries. Keeping the temperature low (no higher than boiling water temp) insures against this type of degradation yet is sufficient to kill off most bacteria.
Reuse ? 🙁
Being a bit paranoid about salmonella (et al) in "natural" products I did a quick look at 'pasteurization' and settled on 175 deg. F. for 5 minutes with a gentle stir. That seems to stay well below the smoke point for both Shea Butter and Coconut Oil.

Easier? Perhaps, although the Natural Lube recipe is simplicity itself. Safer? Ha! No way in hell.

Hello DonkeyLover, 🙂
I agree with rumel. Ditch that batch and start over. No sense in risking your health.

Hello Plantation, 🙂
The ingredients in the oil based Yes lube look safe to me. Quite similar to rumel's natural jelly recipe actually.

The water based one, not so much. But still probably better than the majority of water based lubes out there.
